Hello all!
I have a Beocord 5500 that I bought second-hand in the hope of being able to repair it. One of the issues with it is that the large Drawer doesn't seem to have a latch when it is closed. If you lift it slightly at the back, the tray slides out.
I have opened it up and noticed that the drive belt for the Drawer is a bit loose. However I can't imagine that it would have any impact on whether the drawer locks or not in closed state.
I haven't tried replacing any drive belts yet because I want to know if my problem is solvable or not before doing so
Has anyone had a similar issue and knows where the locking mechanism is located? I have twisted and turned it, but I haven't been able to figure out what is supposed to keep the tray closed

the Beocord 5500-7000 has no lock system. This behaviour is quite normal, no defect.

Now I know that I shouldn't look for something that doesn't exist atleast!
Do you know if there is anything that can be done to fix the problem, or is it completely hopeless, do you think?

The gear box and the linear slide had a special silicon grease. This grease is very stiff and used as a damping stuff, making smooth and slow movements.
The problem: after 30 years it can be like cement or glue. I'm used to remove it and clean it, since it is hard to get and dependend on the temperature. Sometimes the drawer did not open any more.
Sometimes there was so much force, that the gearbox wheel was broken.
The gearbox can be adjusted between light and somewhat little more more heavy slide. But this means that the mainboard must be lifted out of the drawer ... i do not recommend removing this board. It can break easily.

You write that it is possible to adjust the gearbox between light and heavy.
How do you do this? Do you mean that you adjust it by how much grease you apply, or do you adjust it in some other way?

Erik,
The drawer is primarily held in place by the belt and drawer motor. The motor's resistance to turning, along with the mechanical advantage of the belts and pulleys, keeps things in place. One can still open the drawer manually by back-driving the motor. I would start debugging this by replacing the belt. A loose, slipping belt would result in the behavior that you are describing.

There is a linear gear and inside is a sliding pin on the drawer. There you can use this silicon grease.
The axle is not so good, since i have seen that the torque can open the axle and the axle becomes loose. And a loose axle usually ends in a broken wheel...
The gearbox has one fixing bolt and is adjustable ...
The damping grease is a bit too thick for this.
The action will be smooth, but the timing may not allow for complete opening and closing.
