Beomaster 5500 Master Control - rotary control only works in one direction

After many years of faithful service, my master control panel only works in one direction (turning anti-clockwise). I realise it's optical, but that bit is clearly working, correct? Any pointers on how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.
From memory there's also a little microswitch* next to the optical sensor.  This is mechanically operated by the wheel and basically tells the system which way the wheel is turning.  I would look at that in the first instance. (* as opposed to a 'big' microswitch 😀) EDIT2:  This thread discusses the problem and has a useful photo of the switch:
