It’s been a couple of years since I posted - the Chromecast on my A6 still doesn’t work. Is this a lost cause or was a fix found?

Lost cause.
Even more recent products such as M5, Essence MK2, and Beosound 1/2 1st Gen no longer support new Chromecast firmware versions, which makes them incompatible with many Chromecast-enabled apps.
Some apps still work though. What app are you trying to use and with which devices?
