New here - Please can anyone help ? Turntable based system

Hi I am interested in getting a refurbished Beogram 4002 turntable . But as this will be my first step into Bang and Olufssen I wonder if anyone could help please ? I have a current Hi Fi system based around a Linn Sondek , Linn speakers and Cyrus amp/CD . I would like to run a separate turntable based system to contrast and compare to the Linn before I fully swap to B and O . Can I use the 4002 with its pre amp to play into my current speakers or do I need to use an amp ? If I were to get B and O speakers as well as the turntable would that work ? Sorry if the questions are a bit basic ! I have the B and O book on order from Crowood press to help educate me and joining here will obviously help ! Thanks DWW

Hi and welcome to Beoworld! When you say a 'refurbished' Beogram 4002, has the Beogram been retro-fitted with a pre-amp, because it didn't come with one as standard?  It will need a pre-amp if you wish to connect to a 'line' input of most amplifiers.  Some amplifiers will have a built in pre-amp, in which case the input is often labled as 'phono'. The Beoworld product page for the Beogram 4002 is here:   If your Linn Sondek is using an external pre-amp, you could (with the right adaptor) connect the Beogram to that, and then to your Cyrus amp and Linn speakers. There are two main types of B&O speakers: Beovox:  Passive speakers that need a seperate amplifier.  Most non-B&O amplifiers can drive these, but you might need to be careful with impedance - keep volume levels low when first testing. Beolab:  Active speakers that have their own power amplifier built in, and require their own mains power supply.  If part of a B&O system, there are usually connected by Powerlink cables (with 8-pin DIN plugs at each ed) from a B&O Beomaster or Beosystem with Powerlink outputs. If your Beogram does not have a built in pre-amp, you could get a pre-amp with volume control and then drive Beolab (not Beovox) speakers directly.  The site Sponsor SoundsHeavenly supply such a pre-amp, and will probably be able to offer further advice:

Great that is really helpful thanks ! I have still to buy the turntable so will look out for the Sounds Heavenly amp and leads if I go with the B and O speakers as well which I think will be the way forward . That way I can have the B and O as a separate turntable system . Thanks !

Hi I have made some progress ! After listening and comparing speakers I have bought a pair of Beolab 3 speakers and a Beolab 2 subwoofer . To say I am pleased with the result would be an understatement ! The difference between them and my old Linn speakers is huge . I am currently playing my Sonos Port through the speakers . Next on the agenda is a B and O turntable . A big thank you to Steve at Sounds Heavenly for the cabling advice and superb service ! Cheers DWW

Have you listened to a Beogram? I have had most in my time and still have a 4000, 4004 and a 6000 masquerading as a 4001! They are very good turntables but are not Linn Sondek level. You also have the issue of cartridge compatibility - they only take B&O cartridges or Soundsmith cartridges. The latter are new. These are quite expensive - I have had one though I prefer the original B&O ones but most will be getting rather old and the suspension will get stiff and can collapse. Equally the styli do wear. I confess to liking the BG4000 the most - hideously over engineered - the later models were made more economically and sounded much the same - the platter on the 4000 and some early 4002s is much heavier and the motor system differs - AC versus DC - Beocentral has a good description of the decks. Choice of cartridge is important - I use mainly MMC20CL cartridges though have had a couple of cartridges retipped  to good effect. Shame you are in Devon as I would lend you a deck to try - I am at the exact opposite end of the country!!

Hi , Thanks for your reply ! I am hoping to get the Beogram turntable and run it side by side with the Linn Sondek so that I can compare the sound . However I have now got the Linn running "line in " through the Sonos Port and its sounds brilliant through the Beolab's . I am fascinated by the "linear tracking" on some of the models and would really like to listen to those models . Cheers DWW
